State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has revealed the selection of eight schools as Model Community Day Schools (MCDSs) for 2024, marking the first year of implementation. Community day schools cater to students who have faced expulsion, attendance issues, or behavioral challenges.
Thurmond commended the chosen schools for their dedication to students and families, stating, “By providing students with myriad educational options, mental health resources, and other support services, these schools have addressed students’ needs, elevated their strengths and assets, and set them on a trajectory for success.”
The MCDS Recognition Program, a collaboration between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Continuation Education Association Plus (CCEA Plus), aims to support schools in enhancing their educational practices and serving as resources for districts planning to establish new community day schools.
Schools underwent a rigorous self-evaluation focusing on various elements such as School Profile, School Management, and Educating “This Whole Child” in both instructional and social, emotional, and mental health aspects. Those selected will retain their designation for three years and will be acknowledged at the CCEA Plus 2024 State Conference.
Among the distinguished MCDSs for 2024 are Johnson High School, REACH Academy, and Pathway Community Day School, each recognized for their unique approaches to student support and development.
Johnson High School was praised for its emphasis on differentiated instruction, cooperative group work, and comprehensive mental health support to prevent and respond to crises. REACH Academy stood out for its focus on restorative practices, academic monitoring, and student engagement through technology and career exploration. Pathway Community Day School was commended for its inclusive school management approach, integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum, and supporting students facing behavioral challenges.
The Model Community Day Schools initiative highlights the commitment of these schools to holistic student development and success. More information on Community Day Schools can be found on the CDE Community Day Schools web page.
