California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced felony charges against three individuals allegedly involved in an organized retail crime ring that targeted high-end retail stores across California. The suspects were charged with organized retail theft, robbery, and grand theft following a spree of commercial burglaries and attempted burglaries that occurred between December 12, 2022, and February 12, 2024, resulting in over $300,000 in losses to the stores.

Attorney General Bonta emphasized the impact of organized retail theft on businesses, retailers, and consumers, stating, "Organized retail theft harms businesses, retailers, and consumers – and puts the public at risk." He commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in apprehending the suspects and reiterated the commitment of the California Department of Justice to safeguard communities from retail theft and other crimes.

Chief of Detectives Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department highlighted the regional nature of organized retail theft and underscored the importance of maintaining public safety and trust within communities. The suspects allegedly carried out smash and grab style thefts targeting high-end brands such as Burberry, Prada, Gucci, and Coach, resulting in the theft of merchandise valued at approximately $309,752.

The prevalence of organized retail crime is a concern not only in California but across the United States. A 2020 national survey revealed that U.S. retailers lose significant amounts to organized retail crime, with an estimated loss of $700,000 per every $1 billion in sales. Attorney General Bonta has prioritized addressing this issue and encourages the public to report any suspicions or tips related to retail crime.

While criminal charges have been filed against the suspects, it is important to remember that they are considered innocent until proven guilty. The California Department of Justice will continue its efforts to combat organized retail crime and protect businesses and consumers from such criminal activities.
