Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring March 19, 2024, as Nowrūz Day in the State of California.
"For millions of people around the world, Nowrūz marks a new year and the beginning of spring. Observed for more than 3,000 years on the vernal equinox, many know Nowrūz, meaning “new day,” as Persian New Year," Governor Newsom stated in the proclamation.
The proclamation highlighted the significance of Nowrūz as a celebration that transcends borders and religion, emphasizing the renewal of nature and the coming together of family and friends to partake in unique traditions. It noted the central role of the "haft-seen" table, featuring seven symbolic items that start with the letter “s”.
"Our state’s vibrant Iranian community contributes to the rich fabric of cultures foundational to California as we know it," Governor Newsom acknowledged, recognizing the substantial Iranian population in California, particularly in Los Angeles, where "Tehrangeles" serves as a thriving cultural hub shaped by Persian residents and businesses.
The proclamation concluded with a call for unity and celebration, urging all Californians to join in commemorating Nowrūz and embracing its message of living in harmony with nature and one another.
In witness whereof, Governor Gavin Newsom officially proclaimed March 19, 2024, as “Nowrūz Day” in California.
