SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom announced today a groundbreaking partnership between the state of California and Stellantis, the fourth-largest automaker in the world, aimed at increasing the number of clean cars on the roads and reducing pollution. The agreement includes significant commitments from Stellantis to align with California's clean car goals and invest in charging infrastructure.
Governor Newsom expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with Stellantis will help California achieve our ambitious goals to drastically cut pollution and get more clean cars on the roads. The biggest and most influential companies in the world understand that this is how we can fight climate change together, and it’s another example of the private sector joining California to help millions of people get into clean vehicles.”
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares also highlighted the positive impact of the agreement, emphasizing, “Together, we have found a win-win solution that is good for the customer and good for the planet. This agreement will avoid 10 to 12 million metric tons greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of the agreement and will also allow our U.S. customers to fully benefit from our advanced technologies.”
As part of the partnership, Stellantis will invest $4 million in deploying public charging infrastructure in California’s rural areas and parks, with an additional $6 million allocated to other states that have adopted California’s greenhouse gas emissions standards. The automaker has also committed to supporting California’s zero-emissions vehicle sales targets and clean air standards.
CARB Chair Liane Randolph praised the collaboration between California and Stellantis, stating, “California’s work with leading manufacturers is an example of the collaboration that will clean our air, combat climate change and improve health outcomes for residents in the state. Importantly, industry collaboration helps accelerate the deployment of zero-emissions options that will make a more sustainable future possible.”
This partnership is the latest in California's efforts to work with automakers to promote cleaner technology, increase consumer options, and enhance public health. The state has seen a significant increase in sales of zero-emission vehicles in recent years, surpassing goals ahead of schedule.
