California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside the U.S. Department of Justice and a bipartisan coalition of 16 states attorneys general, has filed a lawsuit against Apple, challenging the tech giant's anticompetitive behavior concerning its iPhone smartphones. The lawsuit alleges that Apple's actions have led to higher prices for consumers and stifled innovation in the smartphone industry.

Attorney General Bonta emphasized that Apple's conduct has had a detrimental impact on consumers, stating, "Apple's anticompetitive conduct intentionally leaves consumers bearing the cost of sky-high smartphone prices at a time when smartphones are now essential to so much of our day-to-day lives." He further highlighted the importance of consumer choice and competition in driving innovation and economic growth in California.

The lawsuit specifically accuses Apple of violating Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act by engaging in monopolistic practices that hinder competition. It alleges that Apple has protected its monopoly by impeding technologies that could promote competition and make switching to other smartphones easier and more affordable.

According to the complaint, Apple has engaged in various tactics to limit competition, including degrading cross-platform messaging apps, blocking cloud gaming services, restricting digital wallet competitors, and inhibiting the functionality of third-party smartwatches when used with iPhones. These actions have not only restricted consumer choice but have also led to higher prices and fees for smartphone users.

In a joint effort with the U.S. Department of Justice and other states attorneys general, Attorney General Bonta aims to hold Apple accountable for its anticompetitive practices and ensure a fair and competitive market for consumers. The lawsuit underscores the commitment to protecting consumers, promoting innovation, and upholding antitrust laws.

Attorney General Bonta's recent legal actions against corporate entities, such as Google and Agri Stats, Inc., demonstrate a consistent effort to combat anticompetitive behavior and safeguard consumer interests in various industries. His proactive approach in challenging monopolistic practices underscores the importance of maintaining fair competition and ensuring consumer welfare in the marketplace.
