California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside local leaders, engaged in a roundtable discussion in Los Angeles to address the pressing issue of gun violence. Bonta emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Gun violence is an epidemic that pervades our society.” The roundtable aimed to bring together community-based organizations to formulate effective approaches for addressing gun violence, fostering knowledge about accessible resources, and enhancing partnerships to prevent shootings and interrupt cycles of trauma and violence in California.
Ben “Taco” Owens of Detours Mentoring Group highlighted the goal of striving for zero gun-related incidents, stating, “As we celebrate a downward trend in violence, we must remember that any lives lost by gun violence is too many—we aim for zero: zero homicides and zero gunshots.” Mia Livas Porter of Moms Demand Action echoed the sentiment, calling gun violence a public health epidemic that requires collective action.
Connie Rice, a prominent figure in violence reduction strategies, emphasized the importance of safety and freedom from violence as fundamental rights. She stated, “The first of all civil rights is safety. And the first of all freedoms is freedom from violence.”
Attorney General Bonta reiterated his commitment to combatting gun violence by defending California's gun safety laws, cracking down on enforcement, and collaborating with local violence prevention experts. The establishment of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention under Bonta's leadership has been a significant step towards addressing the gun violence epidemic in the state.
The roundtable discussion underscored the need for community-based efforts to protect survivors and prevent further violence. By advocating for stricter gun laws, educating the public on prevention strategies, and seizing illegal firearms, Attorney General Bonta and his partners are working towards creating safer neighborhoods and reducing the harm caused by firearms in California.
