State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond led a California Apprenticeship Summit in Sacramento aimed at showcasing apprenticeship opportunities and career technical education pathways for California's youth. The event convened industry experts, educators, and students to discuss the benefits of apprenticeships in connecting young individuals to high-wage, high-growth career avenues.

Thurmond emphasized the significance of registered apprenticeships, stating, "What makes registered apprenticeship unique as an educational opportunity is that it disrupts the myth that our young people need to choose between investing in their learning and earning right away." He highlighted the support for learning, mentorship, workplace protections, and clear pathways to career advancement that apprenticeships offer, allowing students to transition seamlessly from high school to a fulfilling career.

The summit addressed various aspects of apprenticeship programs, including opportunities for youth, the advantages of hiring youth apprentices, and strategies to expand on-the-job training for sixteen-to-eighteen-year-olds. Research from the United States Department of Labor revealed that 90 percent of apprentices who complete a registered program secure employment, with an average salary of $80,000 and a significant lifetime earnings advantage.

Thurmond's dedication to Trade Programs and Career Tech Education (CTE) programs was evident throughout the summit. He has actively supported initiatives to equip students with the necessary skills for postsecondary education and careers in building and construction trades. Additionally, Thurmond's advocacy for increased apprenticeships and skilled trade workers has extended to public infrastructure improvements in education, such as the CA Schools Healthy Air, Plumbing and Efficiency Program.

Furthermore, Thurmond's involvement in the California Apprenticeship Council and sponsorship of AB 247 (Muratsuchi), a Statewide School Facilities Bond, underscore his commitment to educational infrastructure development. The proposed bond measure, if approved, would allocate over $14 billion for K–12 and California Community College Districts, focusing on new school construction and modernization.
