California has increased its support for hurricane response efforts by deploying additional Urban Search and Rescue personnel. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the deployment of 70 more firefighters from California to Florida as Hurricane Milton makes landfall. This follows an earlier deployment of 144 California-based personnel prepositioned in Florida this week.

Governor Newsom had previously sent resources to assist with Hurricane Helene, including 140 firefighters and support staff. In total, California has now deployed 354 personnel to aid in hurricane response operations. These teams are equipped to conduct search and rescue missions around the clock when conditions allow.

“In times of crisis, Americans unite to lend a helping hand. California is sending hundreds of emergency personnel to aid Florida as the state endures devastating hurricanes. Floridians, please stay safe and follow all emergency guidance,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), working closely with FEMA, dispatched the additional Task Force members from Orange County and Menlo Park. These specialized teams are trained for structural collapse scenarios and swift water or flood environments.

According to Cal OES Director Nancy Ward, “California is dedicated to helping those in the path of this major storm. With the deployment of these additional resources, we can help bolster ongoing response and recovery efforts as Hurricane Milton impacts communities across Florida.”

This deployment does not affect California's own emergency response capabilities. Previously, Governor Newsom also provided support for other states facing natural disasters, including Texas, Georgia, New Mexico, Hawaii, Oregon, and Montana over the past two years.
