California Attorney General Rob Bonta, in collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and a coalition of 51 bipartisan attorneys general, has issued a warning to iDentidad Advertising Development LLC, also known as iDentidad Telecom. The company is accused of transmitting illegal robocall traffic that includes impersonations of government officials and misuse of hotlines such as one used by the Illinois Attorney General’s office.
The warning letter demands that iDentidad cease transmitting unlawful call traffic immediately. The alleged activities violate several laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the Truth in Caller ID Act. "Consumers deserve to know that the voice on the other end of the line is precisely who they claim to be," stated Attorney General Bonta. He emphasized the potential financial harm caused by robocalls and expressed pride in joining this national effort to curb them.
iDentidad is identified as a gateway provider responsible for bringing high-volume robocall campaigns from outside into the U.S., featuring scams involving IRS/Social Security Administration imposters and utility scams. The letter warns that failure to comply could lead to legal actions such as seeking damages or civil penalties.
In addition to this action, the FCC has sent a cease-and-desist order demanding an immediate halt to illegal robocall support on iDentidad's network. The Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force continues its efforts against those facilitating illegal robocalls across the United States.
Attorney General Bonta remains committed to enforcing consumer protections in California and nationwide. His past actions include joining coalitions against companies allegedly involved in scam election robocalls and responding to FCC inquiries about AI technology's impact on consumer protection from illegal communications.
