California is set to deploy 10,000 service members in the upcoming service year, providing paid positions and educational financial support for young Californians eager to contribute to their communities. Governor Gavin Newsom announced this initiative for the California Service Corps, expecting over five million service hours in 2025.
Governor Newsom stated, "As we launch this new service year with the nation’s largest service corps, we reaffirm that service to others is the highest form of civic duty. These paid opportunities embody the best of California’s values — a commitment to each other, mutual understanding, and the belief that when we lift others, we all rise together."
The California Service Corps aims to assist communities by tutoring and mentoring K-12 students, supporting disaster-affected areas, combating food insecurity by connecting people with resources and services, and taking climate action through activities like planting trees and installing solar panels.
Programs under the California Service Corps include #CaliforniansForAll College Corps, Youth Service Corps, California Climate Action Corps, and AmeriCorps California.
Josh Fryday, California Chief Service Officer remarked, “Service members have stepped up to bridge divides and help their communities by serving in the California Service Corps. These members are the state’s future leaders, and we need their energy and enthusiasm to address our greatest challenges.”
Participants will gain valuable skills while making a positive impact on their communities. They will receive living stipends and can earn up to $10,000 toward higher education costs after completing their service.
