Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a new initiative to tackle crime in San Bernardino by launching a California Highway Patrol (CHP) operation. This move is part of ongoing efforts to address crime across various Californian cities, including Oakland, Bakersfield, and San Francisco. The operation aims to support the San Bernardino Police Department in reducing property theft and violent crime, notably gun violence.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of this support, stating, “We are sending additional CHP support to help local law enforcement aggressively suppress criminal activity and provide this community with a new level of safety and accountability. Whether in the Bay Area, the Central Valley, or Southern California — we are monitoring and stand ready to step in and support local law enforcement to protect communities and keep Californians safe.”
San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran expressed gratitude for the additional resources provided by the state. She noted that this year has seen a 13% reduction in violent crime due to efforts by the City Police Department. "This year, our City Police Department’s efforts have led to a 13% reduction in violent crime, and the extra support will strengthen public safety in our community," said Mayor Tran.
Recent statistics highlight that San Bernardino's violent crime rate is nearly double the statewide average. Additionally, its homicide rate is more than three times higher than California's average. The city also struggles with one of the highest vehicle theft rates in the state.
The CHP’s operation will involve deploying special units both on land and aerially to target illegal activities such as sideshows and vehicle thefts. Additional investigative support will be provided to disrupt organized criminal networks and reduce gun violence.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee highlighted the benefits of this partnership: “Our partnership with the city of San Bernardino strengthens our efforts to enhance public safety,” he said. “This collaboration allows us to share resources, intelligence, and expertise, enhancing our ability to reduce crime and create a safer environment for all members of the community.”
Statewide initiatives have shown promising results with over 3,200 arrests made through similar operations elsewhere in California. These efforts have also led to significant recoveries of stolen vehicles and illegal firearms.
Governor Newsom's administration has been investing heavily since 2019 into resources aimed at fighting crime statewide. A historic investment was announced last year targeting organized retail theft which resulted in over 10,000 arrests within nine months.
Additionally, recent legislation signed by Governor Newsom imposes stricter penalties for property crimes while providing tools for felony prosecutions against repeat offenders involved in activities like shoplifting or auto burglary.
