Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Ventura County due to the Mountain Fire, which has burned over 19,643 acres. The fire has led to evacuations, destroyed homes, and threatened critical infrastructure. Governor Newsom announced that FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to support firefighting efforts.
“This is a dangerous fire that’s spreading quickly and is threatening lives. California has mobilized state resources, including personnel, engines and aircraft from CAL FIRE and Cal OES, to protect communities as our fire and emergency response teams work around the clock to combat this fire. Stay safe and remain alert for instructions from local authorities as dangerous fire weather conditions continue,” stated Governor Gavin Newsom.
The FEMA grant provides a 75 percent federal cost share with the state covering the remaining 25 percent for response costs. This enables local governments to allocate resources effectively against wildfires posing significant threats.
Cal OES had prepositioned nearly one hundred engines and two firefighting hand crews in Ventura County in anticipation of severe fire weather conditions.
California's ongoing efforts to combat wildfires include treating 700,000 acres for wildfire resilience in 2023 and doubling prescribed fires since 2021. The state maintains $2.6 billion funding over seven years for forest health and prevention programs. Additionally, California is expanding its aerial firefighting fleet with more helicopters equipped for night operations and assuming ownership of seven C-130 air tankers.
Technological advancements are also being utilized with increased drone use by CAL FIRE for tasks like aerial ignition during prescribed burns and real-time assessments. AI-powered tools are employed for quicker fire detection alongside real-time mapping through the Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS).
Governor Newsom emphasized continued investment in these initiatives to enhance California's capacity in managing wildfires effectively.
