California Attorney General Rob Bonta, together with a coalition of state attorneys general, has submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the Office of Management and Budget. The requests aim to gather information on the number of veterans and their spouses who have been terminated as part of mass layoffs initiated by the Trump Administration. Veterans make up approximately 30% of the federal workforce, making the federal government the largest employer of veterans in the country.

Attorney General Bonta stated, “We won’t let the President’s ruthless decision to fire employees, including many U.S. veterans and their spouses, go unchecked.” He further commented on the impact these decisions have had across states by disrupting essential services and affecting veteran households: “Our veterans have risked their lives for our safety and freedom, and they deserve better.”

The FOIA requests specifically seek documents detailing how many veterans and their spouses have been terminated since January 20, 2025. The requests also call for data on federal employees entitled to veterans' preference in employment who were terminated, as well as any related correspondence regarding Executive Orders 14210 and 14217 that directed large-scale workforce reductions.

Attorney General Bonta is joined by his counterparts from Arizona, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington in submitting these inquiries.

Copies of these requests are publicly accessible online.
