Multiple public safety agencies responded to a fatal water rescue on North San Marcos Road in Santa Barbara on January 3, 2026. Authorities said the incident began at about 11:58 a.m., when family members called 911 to report that an adult male had been swept into Maria Ygnacio Creek.
Responding units included the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Santa Barbara County Air Support, and Ventura County Air Support. After an extensive search under dangerous conditions, responders located the man deceased at approximately 1:50 p.m. in the creek near San Marcos Road and Via Parva. The identity of the victim is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a warning as heavy rain continues in the region, urging people to avoid creeks, rivers, drainage channels, and other waterways because water levels can rise quickly and currents may be stronger than they appear. The agency advised against attempting to cross flooded roads or walking near swollen creeks. “If you encounter a flooded roadway or hazardous water conditions, turn around – don’t drown,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
