California Attorney General Rob Bonta commented on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act’s preventive care mandate. This mandate obligates private insurers to cover specific preventive services at no cost to consumers, including cardiovascular disease intervention and various cancer screenings.

“Preventive care saves lives and lowers healthcare costs, and this decision keeps that care within reach for all Americans,” stated Attorney General Bonta. He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant in defending these services for Californians.

The case began in March 2023 when a Texas district court deemed the requirement for insurers to cover certain preventive services unconstitutional. The Fifth Circuit partially upheld this ruling in June 2024. Attorney General Bonta participated in a multistate amicus brief supporting access to preventive healthcare as the case progressed to the Supreme Court.
