President Trump is facing criticism for his use of military forces in California, which some claim violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law. Governor Newsom expressed concern over the deployment, stating, “Trump is pulling a military dragnet across LA, well beyond his stated intent to just go after violent and serious criminals.”

Despite previously acknowledging that federalizing the National Guard without a governor’s request would be illegal, President Trump has directed 4,800 guards and Marines to Los Angeles. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem remarked in 2024, “If Joe Biden federalizes the National Guard, that would be a direct attack on states’ rights.”

The cost of deploying these forces has reached approximately $134 million. This move has sparked debates about its legality and necessity since local law enforcement reportedly had control over the situation before their arrival.

On June 7, President Trump issued an order authorizing the deployment of National Guard personnel for 60 days. The order did not specifically target California but allowed potential federal control over any state militia without prior consent from governors like Gavin Newsom.

Critics argue that there was no insurrection or rebellion in Los Angeles warranting such action. They also point out that this decision could undermine state resources needed for emergency response tasks like drug interdiction and disaster management.

Governor Newsom has described President Trump’s actions as “an unmistakable step towards authoritarianism,” emphasizing the risk they pose to democratic principles.
