Rep. Norma Torres, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district, has been vocal about various issues through her recent social media posts. She addressed topics including alleged misconduct by immigration agencies, fiscal policies affecting Latino families, and the ongoing fight for equality.
On July 9, 2025, Rep. Torres expressed concern over actions by ICE and CBP in a post where she stated: “I’ve seen the videos. I’ve read the reports. ICE and CBP are profiling, beating, and unlawfully detaining people simply for how they look.” She urged employees within these agencies who have witnessed abuse to report it using the provided contact information.
Later that day, Torres criticized a new fiscal plan proposed by former President Donald Trump. In her tweet at 19:14 UTC, she described it as “an attack direct against familias latinas y recién nacidos,” condemning it as cruel rather than fiscal policy because it could deprive children of food and medical care based on their parents’ immigration status.
Also on July 9, at 19:21 UTC, Rep. Torres commemorated the anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment with a message highlighting its significance and the continued struggle for its promise to be fulfilled. She stated: “Today marks 156 years since the ratification of the 14th Amendment… But for too many that promise remains unfulfilled.”
Norma Torres has served in Congress since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and now residing in Pomona, she holds a BA from National Labor College.
