On Saturday, protests in Los Angeles began with over 250 participants before the National Guard was deployed. By Sunday, following President Trump’s controversial decision to deploy the military, the number of protesters swelled to more than 3,000. The presence of military forces appears to have spurred further demonstrations.
President Trump issued a memo authorizing the deployment of 2,000 National Guard personnel to Los Angeles for a period of 60 days. This action has prompted criticism from state officials who argue it infringes on state sovereignty and was done without proper coordination with local authorities. Governor Gavin Newsom has taken steps to address this situation by requesting that federal control over the National Guard be rescinded.
Governor Newsom has also filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to block what he describes as an “unnecessary militarization” of Los Angeles. He argues that President Trump’s actions are creating chaos and fear for political gain and calls them an “unmistakable step towards authoritarianism.”
In response to these developments, Governor Newsom met with local law enforcement leaders and other officials to strategize on maintaining peace in Los Angeles. He emphasized that state and local leaders are working together to ensure community safety.
The deployment has raised concerns about potential violations of constitutional rights, particularly regarding the expanded duties assigned to CalGuard by the Department of Defense (DOD), which include assisting ICE agents in civilian law enforcement activities.
Additionally, President Trump’s budget proposal is under scrutiny for cutting funds from public safety programs across the country. Critics argue that these cuts undermine efforts to reduce crime and support police departments.
Governor Newsom’s office continues to express opposition to what they view as an unlawful federal takeover of California’s National Guard, calling for an immediate end to these actions.
