Lulu Twidale led the California Golden Bears women’s basketball team to a 73-58 victory over Boston College at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill on Sunday. Twidale scored a career-high 36 points, including eight three-pointers. This marks the highest single-game point total for a Golden Bear since Kristine Anigwe’s 37-point performance against Houston in November 2018, and her eight threes are second only to Asha Thomas’s program record of nine set in 2017.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the ACC, while Boston College dropped to 4-17 and remains winless in conference play. Cal made 14 three-pointers as a team, their most this season, securing their second consecutive win over the Eagles.
Twidale also contributed nine assists, leading all players. Gisella Maul added a personal-best five three-pointers and matched her career high with 15 points while grabbing nine rebounds.
Cal opened the game with a strong start, going on a 13-0 run powered by Twidale’s early scoring. Boston College managed its first basket just over halfway through the opening quarter but was unable to close the gap as Cal maintained control throughout much of the contest.
After building an early lead, Cal held off several comeback attempts from Boston College. In the second quarter, Mjracle Sheppard ended an Eagles run with a layup and Twidale helped restore momentum with another three-pointer. The Bears led by seven at halftime.
In the third quarter, Cal extended its lead with contributions from both Twidale and Maul before Boston College closed out the period on a short run to cut into the deficit. However, back-to-back threes from Maul early in the fourth quarter put Cal firmly ahead.
“It’s always great when she [Lulu Twidale] knocks down shots,” said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. “We’re really confident in her shooting. We want her to shoot every time she’s open. I like the fact that she had nine assists. I think she was looking for people to make plays, to get other people shots, and was really intentional and focused on being a play maker in that way for us, and that’s really important.”
Boston College was led by Lily Carmody’s 17 points.
Cal will next host Stanford on Sunday at 3 p.m. PT.
