Dominic Davis, 40, and Sharitia Wright, 61, both from Sacramento, have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a scheme to file false income tax returns. Acting U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Sanchez announced that Davis will serve three years and four months in prison, while Wright received a sentence of one year and three months.
Court documents show that between March 2019 and April 2022, Davis and Wright were involved in submitting at least nine fraudulent income-tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service. The returns sought more than $2 million in refunds by reporting wages not actually earned. These filings were made using the names of Davis, Wright, and family members.
The fraudulent returns often listed various LLCs created by Davis, Wright, or their relatives as employers. Many also included claims of charitable contributions that did not occur. According to prosecutors, “Davis prepared and filed the false tax returns. Wright provided him information and contacted the IRS to check on the status of the refunds claimed in the false tax returns.”
Both defendants have been ordered to pay restitution for the fraudulent refunds they obtained.
“This case was the product of an investigation by IRS Criminal Investigation,” according to authorities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas M. Fogg prosecuted the case.
