UC Davis is marking the retirement of several long-serving faculty and staff members who have significantly contributed to the university. Among them is Gang Sun, a professor in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, who is retiring after three decades at UC Davis. Sun, originally from Donghua University in China and Auburn University in the United States, has focused his research on fiber and textile materials. Reflecting on his career, Sun stated, “This was a rare career opportunity for me.”
Ernie Hoftyzer’s journey at UC Davis began as a temporary staff member before becoming Chief Administrative Officer of the Institute of Transportation Studies in 2004. His role later shifted to the Genome Center, concluding with a position at the College of Biological Sciences. Hoftyzer emphasized his enjoyment working within academic departments: “That is where the university’s action is.”
Milmon Harrison retires as associate vice provost for Academic Programs in Undergraduate Education and an associate professor in African American and African Studies. Harrison shared insights into his career path shaped by mentorship: “I learned a lot of things that I didn’t know going into my career as an academic.” He hopes his legacy will be one of inspiring others.
Mike Sheehan leaves after 33 years as Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Housing and Dining Services. He praised UC Davis for aligning with his values: “Historically, the values of UC Davis have been in sync with my own.”
Other notable retirees include Kathleen Socolofsky from the Arboretum and Public Garden, Graduate School of Management professors David Woodruff and Hollis Skaife, WorkLife Manager Sandy Batchelor, Director Carol Kirshnit from the Academic and Staff Assistance Program, Blair Stephenson from Finance Operations and Administration, and Perry Eggleston from Transportation Services.
