The University of California Board of Regents has appointed UC Davis graduate student Miguel Craven as the 2026-27 student regent. Craven will serve as a student regent-designate from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, and will have voting privileges when his term begins on July 1, 2026.
Craven holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from UC Merced, where he was also the student body president of the Associated Students. During his tenure, he worked to expand funding for student organizations and create new professional development pathways. He has advocated at the state level for improved student resources with the aim of making higher education accessible to all Californians.
Previously, Craven served as a student observer to the UC Board of Regents’ Committee on Finance and Capital Strategies. At UC Merced, he led a campaign for constructing a student union building on campus. Currently pursuing his master’s degree in Energy Systems at UC Davis, Craven is committed to empowering students in STEM fields.
“As a proud UC Merced alum, I have experienced firsthand the transformative impact a UC education has on our students,” said Craven. “I’m honored to continue working with the Board of Regents and students to enhance educational and co-curricular opportunities to develop the next generation of leaders in our communities.”
Two panels of student leaders reviewed applications and interviewed semifinalists before a special committee nominated Craven. The appointment was confirmed at the July 16 Board of Regents meeting.
This year marks the 50th anniversary since Carol Mock became the first appointed student regent in 1975 at UC Santa Barbara. To commemorate this milestone, tomorrow’s resolution by the Board will honor those who have served in this role while recognizing its importance in representing students and upholding public trust.
