UC San Diego baseball lost a 3-1 game to Long Beach State on May 1 at Blair Field. The Tritons were limited to three hits in the opening game of the series against the Dirtbags, who took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The outcome matters as it affects UC San Diego’s standing in Big West play, with their record now at 19-22 overall and 14-8 in conference games. Long Beach State improved its record to 15-29 overall and 9-16 in Big West action.
Steele Murdock started for UC San Diego, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts. Jake Villar took the loss after pitching one inning of relief and giving up two runs. J.C. Allen recorded a double for UC San Diego, while Trevian Martinez and Ryson Ujimori also contributed singles. Thomas Maher drove in the only run for UC San Diego with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at one apiece during the fourth inning.
Long Beach State scored first but was held scoreless from the second through seventh innings as Murdock worked out of several jams, including leaving bases loaded in the seventh. The tie was broken by Long Beach State with two runs coming home on two hits—both with two outs—in their half of the eighth inning.
The Tritons left nine runners on base compared to twelve left by Long Beach State. After this result, UC San Diego now has a record of ten wins and seven losses all-time against Long Beach State.
