CITY OF SALINAS: North Main Street Intersection Improvements Project

Intersection

City of Salinas issued the following announcement on Dec 15.

The North Main Street Intersection Improvements Project began construction on Monday, December 14, 2020.  Construction crews are working to install a new traffic signal at North Main Street and Navajo Drive, with coordinated signal timing and accessible pedestrian signals.  The project also includes a new traffic median on North Main Street at Chaparral Street.  Construction work is estimated to take place over 4 months and be completed by March 2021.

The North Main Street Intersection Improvements Project provides much needed traffic safety features on North Main Street.  This segment of North Main Street had a high number of correctable traffic collisions and City staff was successful in obtaining grant funds in 2015 to reduce the collision rate.  Plans were developed, approved and awarded for construction.  Now construction is finally underway and the new signal should be operational by spring, 2021.

The new signal improves Salinas residents’ access to the new Gabilan Library, a nearby bus stop, as well as banking,  shopping and jobs destination in the area.  The project is funded by a grant from the California’s Highway Safety Improvement Program.

Funding for this project is provided by grant funds and Measure X, a sales tax measure approved by Monterey County voters.
