Parents residing in Berkeley are calling out the head of a California teachers union after he was spotted taking his 2-year-old daughter to a private preschool for in-person instruction.
The complaint came because Matt Meyer, the head of a teachers union, blocked the reopening of public schools for in-person teaching. The group of parents who are locally known as the Guerrilla Momz called Meyer out for his seemingly contradictory behavior in a video they posted on YouTube on Feb. 27.
The group also penned a letter which wrote, “Matt Meyer Berkeley Federation of Teachers president blocks opening public schools in-person, yet has had his own child in in-person school since June 2020. Stop the hypocrisy. Our children are suffering. Open schools full-time Now.”
Meyer went on Fox News to share his side of the story. He told Fox News that there were “no public options for kids her age,” which validated his decision to bring her to that school. Meyer also criticized the group for violating his child’s right to privacy.
There seems to be good news on this front. Berkeley Unified School District and the Berkeley Federation of Teachers agreed to reopen public schools in March and April. They are just waiting for staff members to get their COVID-19 vaccinations.
