California Attorney General Rob Bonta has highlighted ongoing efforts to protect California consumers in recognition of National Consumer Protection Week. Bonta urged Californians to report misconduct or violations of state consumer protection laws to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to help determine whether to investigate a business or individual. Bonta emphasized the importance of public involvement, stating, “And we need your help.”

Bonta underscored the significance of consumer financial protection, particularly addressing the issue of overdraft and returned deposited item fees charged by some financial institutions. He warned that these fees may violate California’s Unfair Competition Law and the federal Consumer Financial Protection Act, with low-income consumers and consumers of color disproportionately affected. Bonta's recent actions include joining coalitions to defend states’ rights in enforcing consumer financial protection and supporting the constitutionality of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's funding structure.

Regarding higher education, Bonta's office is committed to easing the burden of federal student loans and protecting California student loan borrowers from predatory practices. Recent successes include a favorable court decision against Ashford University for violating California’s unfair competition and false advertising laws, resulting in a penalty of over $21 million.

In the housing sector, Bonta addressed the housing shortage and affordability crisis in California, emphasizing the importance of tenant protections. Recent settlements with landlords and property management companies for multiple violations of housing laws demonstrate Bonta's commitment to enforcing housing consumer rights. He also issued alerts to educate tenants on their rights and landlords on their obligations under state law.

Bonta's efforts also extend to protecting children online through proposed legislation to limit social media addiction among youth and enhance data privacy protections. His office has taken action against companies like Meta Platforms, Inc. for allegedly deploying harmful features that addict children to social media.

In enforcing the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), Bonta has conducted investigations and settlements with businesses that violate consumer privacy rights. Recent actions include a settlement with DoorDash for selling customers’ personal information without notice or opt-out options.

Addressing telephone scams, Bonta joined coalitions of attorneys general in issuing warnings and responding to regulatory inquiries related to emerging technologies impacting consumer protection. These actions aim to combat fraud and protect consumers from illegal telemarketing practices.

For more information on consumer protection and to report violations, Californians are encouraged to visit the California Department of Justice website.
