Transfer admissions to UC Berkeley are on the rise, with an 11% increase in transfer student applications for the fall of 2024. According to Jocelyn De Jong, Berkeley’s assistant vice chancellor and director of undergraduate admissions, "We are so happy to see the increase in transfer applicants from California." The growth in transfer applications highlights Berkeley's appeal to a diverse pool of students and showcases efforts to create an accessible pathway for California residents.

While there was a slight drop of about 1% in first-year applicants for the fall of 2024 compared to the previous year, the increase in transfer student applications is a positive trend for the university. The UC Office of the President released data for all nine undergraduate campuses, showing a total of about 145,700 students applying for a seat in Berkeley's first-year or transfer class for the upcoming academic year.

Berkeley saw increases in transfer student applications from California residents and underrepresented minority students, indicating a broadening of the university's appeal across different demographics. The data also revealed an increase in students who declined to state their ethnic/racial identity, as well as in applicants identifying as transgender man/trans man and transgender woman/trans woman.

Overall, the rise in transfer admissions to UC Berkeley reflects the university's ongoing efforts to attract a diverse and talented student population. The slight decrease in first-year applications from certain groups is overshadowed by the positive growth in transfer student interest, positioning Berkeley as a desirable destination for students seeking to continue their education at a prestigious institution.
