The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has made significant strides in its operations since Governor Gavin Newsom initiated a partnership with the City of Oakland. The CHP has arrested 1,125 suspects, recovered 2,123 stolen vehicles, and seized 110 illegal firearms since February. Recently, the CHP conducted blitz operations targeting sideshows, resulting in 22 additional arrests and the seizure of 36 vehicles.
Efforts to expand affordable housing in California continue with the opening of People’s Place in Santa Paula. This new complex provides permanent affordable housing for agricultural workers and others, along with supportive services and outdoor spaces.
Governor Newsom is also focusing on reducing gasoline prices by urging the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to expedite studies on increasing ethanol blending in gasoline (E-15). This measure could potentially lower gas prices by up to $0.20 per gallon, saving Californians approximately $2.7 billion annually without significant environmental impact.
In infrastructure developments, over $5 billion has been invested in local and state projects within the past week. These investments are part of Governor Newsom's ongoing 'build more, faster' agenda and are funded partly by the fuel excise tax.
The California Department of Justice released a report highlighting a decrease in ghost guns recovered at crime scenes due to recent legislation. “The number of ghost guns recovered from crime in the state grew enormously every year from 2013-2021 but then decreased by 23% between 2021 and 2023,” states the report.
In other developments across the state, 31 nonprofits will bring art and culture to parks through the Arts in California Parks Grant Program. Additionally, 129 incarcerated individuals have graduated with Associate Degrees at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility as part of efforts to provide skills that prevent re-entry into the justice system.
Furthermore, Clean California has removed 2.8 million cubic yards of trash as part of its beautification efforts.
