California Attorney General Rob Bonta hailed the termination of the proposed $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue and Spirit as a win for consumers in the state. The move to call off the merger was seen as a positive development, preventing the potential elimination of low-cost airfare options and preserving competition in the industry.
In a statement issued following the cancellation of the merger agreement, Attorney General Bonta expressed satisfaction with the outcome. He emphasized the significance of maintaining a competitive marketplace and protecting consumer interests. Bonta highlighted the detrimental effects the merger could have had on air travelers, including higher prices and limited choices.
"Today we celebrate another victory for the important work we do on behalf of consumers and a competitive marketplace here in California and across the country. This merger would have meant higher prices and fewer choices for air travelers, and the stifling of the competitive economy that makes California vibrant and innovative," said Attorney General Bonta.
Bonta also commended the collaborative efforts between his office, the U.S. Department of Justice, and other attorneys general in challenging the proposed merger. The district court's ruling in favor of the coalition effectively blocked the merger, safeguarding the interests of California consumers.
"I am proud of the work my office has done in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice and my fellow attorneys general and will always keep fighting on behalf of a fair and competitive economy and California consumers," added Attorney General Bonta.
The termination of the JetBlue and Spirit merger serves as a testament to the commitment to upholding competition and consumer choice in California's vibrant economy.
