At their quarterly meeting last week, the California Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to oppose both ACA 1 and a newly announced effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom.

ACA 1, a measure that would lower the supermajority vote requirement for tax increases, was opposed by the CalChamber Board due to concerns about its impact on property taxes and affordability in California. The board stated, "If passed, it would open the door for property tax increases as well as local government special taxes, making California less affordable for working families and renters."

The board also expressed worries about the potential consequences of ACA 1, mentioning that "increasing property taxes would add significantly to the cost of owning or leasing business property." The board cited a Public Policy Institute of California poll that found 62% of Californians believe state and local taxes are already too high, indicating a general sentiment against further tax increases.

In addition to opposing ACA 1, the CalChamber Board of Directors voted to oppose the new gubernatorial recall effort against Governor Newsom, citing concerns about the timing, cost to Californians, and the perceived misuse of the recall process. The board's stand against the recall effort reflects a broader sentiment within the organization regarding the importance of stable governance and due process in California politics.

The decisions to oppose both ACA 1 and the gubernatorial recall effort were made in the interest of promoting fiscal responsibility and maintaining a stable political environment in the state.
