Governor Gavin Newsom commended Sacramento and San Jose for their efforts in providing small homes for individuals experiencing homelessness, stating, "These communities are utilizing the resources and funding provided by the state to ensure that more housing is available for individuals experiencing homelessness."
Mayor Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento expressed pride in the collaboration with the state, saying, "This project shows how state and local governments can support each other in addressing our crisis of unsheltered homelessness."
Mayor Matt Mahan of San Jose highlighted the importance of addressing the homelessness crisis, stating, "This is a crisis that will take focus and action from every level of government to solve."
The state has been working closely with the City of Los Angeles and San Diego County to ensure they can also take advantage of the small homes initiative. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors recently approved their small homes proposal, while Los Angeles is in the final stages of scoping and planning their efforts.
Since the announcement of the small homes initiative, California has made significant progress in delivering these units. The state passed legislation to streamline the work, established a procurement process, and finalized contracts with vendors to provide a range of small home models for municipalities to utilize.
