The Sheriff’s Office Programs Unit in Santa Maria, California, proudly announced the graduation of the first participants from the Northern Branch Jail Solar Installation Training Program. According to the announcement, four inmates completed a 60-hour introduction to solar course offered through GRID Alternatives Central Valley.

Instructors involved in the program explained that the training provided hands-on learning for individuals who may not excel in traditional educational settings. The training model followed the principles of Tell, Show, and Do, where participants were guided through theory, demonstrations, and practical tasks to gain skills required for entry-level positions in the solar industry.

Each participant underwent quizzes and evaluations covering job site safety, fall protection, and electrical safety. The program aimed to equip individuals with construction and electrical basics, knowledge of the National Electrical Code, understanding of NABCEP concepts, and proper OSHA safety training.

Upon completion of the program, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills to potential employers during a graduation ceremony that includes a skills demonstration as part of their final assessment.

The vocational program at the North Branch Jail was highlighted for its alignment with the County's Realignment goals, offering a pathway to successful reentry through job training in solar installation. The program aims to provide participants with the necessary skills and employment opportunities in the solar industry to support their transition back into society.

The initiative represents a step towards successful rehabilitation and future employment prospects for individuals involved in the program, showcasing the positive impact of vocational training within correctional facilities.
