As of 8 p.m. tonight, power has been restored to all UC Berkeley buildings affected by the outage caused by a short circuit in a high voltage line at a campus substation earlier this afternoon. The campus anticipates minor lingering impacts within certain buildings, with normal operations expected to resume tomorrow.
According to UC Berkeley, "No injuries to members of the community have been reported." The outage, which affected multiple facilities, was caused by a short circuit in a high voltage line at one of the campus substations.
Efforts are ongoing to fully restore operations in each affected building. "Some buildings are operating on backup generator power," the university stated. The buildings that experienced the loss of power included a wide range of campus facilities, such as residence halls, dining commons, parking structures, academic buildings, and recreational areas.
In response to the outage, UC Berkeley issued a statement advising individuals on campus to "practice personal safety and avoid traveling in and through unlit areas." The university also announced that no in-person classes would be held in buildings without power for the evening.
Updates on the restoration efforts were expected to be provided by 8 p.m. via WarnMe alerts or Berkeley News at https://news.berkeley.edu/. The campus community was encouraged to stay informed through these channels as the situation progressed.
