Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the seizure of over half a million fentanyl pills at the state's ports of entry, a result of California National Guard-supported operations. Speaking on the importance of border security and the need for action from Republicans in Congress, Newsom highlighted the bipartisan border security deal that is being blocked.
"Our increased California National Guard deployment helped federal partners seize over half a million fentanyl pills at the southern border last month," stated Governor Newsom. He expressed frustration with Republicans in Congress, accusing them of hindering efforts to crack down on fentanyl trafficking by blocking the bipartisan border security deal.
The seizures in February included a total of 1,030,728 fentanyl pills statewide, with 592,933 pills seized at the ports of entry. The Governor emphasized the significance of these operations in combating drug trafficking and protecting public health.
Despite efforts to increase funding for counter-narcotics operations, Republicans in Congress, influenced by former President Trump, continue to reject the bipartisan border security deal. This deal aims to enhance law enforcement efforts, implement new sanctions, and provide support for asylum officers and immigration judges.
Governor Newsom's leadership in cracking down on drug smuggling includes a significant increase in the number of CalGuard service members deployed to interdict drugs at U.S. ports of entry. The Governor's commitment to combatting drug trafficking is underscored by California's investment of $30 million to expand CalGuard's work in preventing drug trafficking by transnational criminal organizations.
In addition to urging action on border security, Governor Newsom has been actively involved in discussions with President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping on counternarcotics efforts. California's investment of over $1 billion under Governor Newsom's leadership reflects a comprehensive approach to tackling the opioid crisis and raising awareness about the dangers of opioids.
The Governor's ongoing efforts and advocacy for increased border security and law enforcement cooperation aim to protect communities from the threats posed by illegal drugs like fentanyl.
