Governor Gavin Newsom has declared November 2024 as Native American Heritage Month in California. The proclamation acknowledges the state's significant Native American population and highlights both historical challenges and contemporary achievements within these communities.

"Home to the largest population of Native Americans in the United States, California has long been a land of opportunity for Native Americans from across the nation and continues to be a beacon of hope for those seeking both community and a voice on a national stage," stated Governor Newsom.

The proclamation addresses the painful history associated with federal Indian boarding schools, noting that twelve such institutions were located in California. It references recent developments, including a formal apology by a U.S. President for past atrocities at these schools, expressing hope that this acknowledgment will aid Native communities in healing from intergenerational trauma.

"A testament to the enduring resilience of Native people, this year we witnessed several beautiful celebrations of the truth-telling, heart-wrenching stories of the loss and dispossession of generations of Native communities," said Newsom.

The statement also highlights cultural achievements by Native Americans over the past year. These include awards won by "Reservation Dogs" and performances by Osage singers at the Oscars. Actress Lily Gladstone received recognition for her role in "Killers of the Flower Moon." Additionally, fashion designers Jamie Okuma and Orlando Dugi showcased Indigenous futurism at an event held at the Getty.

Governor Newsom's proclamation calls on Californians to engage with and support Native trailblazers: "Today, as we reflect on the tenacity of Native people in the face of practices aimed at their destruction and bent on making them small and unseen, I call on all Californians to find meaningful opportunities to uplift, validate and engage with Native trailblazers—past and present—across the nation."

This official declaration was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on November 1st, 2024, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting.
