First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom recently visited Sierra College to highlight the workforce programs that are equipping students with the skills needed for lucrative careers. During the tour, Siebel Newsom interacted with students from the Mechatronics program, emphasizing the importance of providing pathways to well-compensated careers.

In a statement during the visit, Siebel Newsom expressed her commitment to supporting Californians in accessing opportunities for well-paying jobs. She stated, "The Sierra College Mechatronics program is a great example of the commitment the Governor and I share to provide Californians with pathways to well-compensated careers so they have the resources to provide for themselves and their families."

One of the success stories highlighted during the visit was Sara Lausmann, Line Maintenance Manager at Bosch Semiconductors. Lausmann, who is also a recipient of a CalCompetes award, shared her journey of transitioning from a Line Maintenance Technician to a managerial role after earning a Mechatronics Certificate at Sierra College. She emphasized the impact of the program in her career progression, stating, "It was a pleasure welcoming California leaders to Sierra College to see the results of the hard work of faculty, staff, and students in changing lives."

Willy Duncan, Sierra College Superintendent/President, commended the collaboration between the college, local businesses, and the state of California in providing students with new opportunities. He mentioned, "Working closely with the local business community and with the support of our community and the State of California we are helping students find new opportunities."

The visit to Sierra College is part of a larger initiative by Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom to prioritize education and career readiness for all Californians. Last year, they launched California’s Family Agenda, aimed at ensuring access to quality education, campus safety, healthy meals, mental health care, and parental involvement in education.

Following the tour, the First Partner inaugurated Governor Newsom’s Council for Career Education, which convened its first off-site meeting on Sierra College's campus. The council comprises members from various sectors including Tk-12 education, higher education, labor, and the business community, demonstrating a collaborative effort to support career development in the state.
