Governor Gavin Newsom of California has officially proclaimed April 7-13, 2024, as "California Library Week." In a proclamation issued today, Governor Newsom highlighted the importance of libraries and library workers in the state.
Governor Newsom emphasized, "During National Library Week, we celebrate the essential services, resources and opportunities that libraries and library workers provide for all Californians." He further recognized the crucial role played by California's library workers in assisting individuals from diverse backgrounds to access necessary resources and services.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom also addressed the challenges faced by libraries and librarians, stating, "All too often, libraries – and librarians – face censorship and attacks amid rising school and library book challenges, many targeting LGBTQ+ authors and writers of color."
The Governor underscored the significance of libraries as community hubs offering a wide range of programs and services, from education and literacy programs to workforce development and civic engagement initiatives. He noted that libraries in California serve as vital spaces for learning, collaboration, and community resilience, especially during emergencies.
As Governor Newsom declared, "In California, we know libraries hold more than books — they are the heart of our communities." The proclamation aims to honor the contributions of libraries and library workers in enriching the lives of Californians across the state.
The proclamation concluded with Governor Newsom officially designating April 7-13, 2024, as "California Library Week" and was signed by the Governor and attested by Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Secretary of State.
