Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis of California has officially declared April 10, 2024, as Dolores Huerta Day in honor of the influential activist's birthday. In a proclamation issued today, Governor Kounalakis highlighted the remarkable achievements and legacy of Dolores Huerta in the realms of labor rights, civil rights, and women's movements.

Quoting from Governor Kounalakis' proclamation, "A powerhouse for social justice, Dolores Huerta was born on this day in 1930 in Dawson, a small mining town in New Mexico. Huerta spent most of her early life in the Central Valley of California, where she found her passion for fighting for the rights of workers and their families and helped pioneer a transformative farm labor movement that carries on to this day."

The proclamation further recognizes Dolores Huerta for her tireless advocacy work and her pivotal role in organizing farmworkers for better conditions. Huerta's collaboration with César Chávez led to the establishment of the National Farm Workers Association, a precursor to the United Farm Workers, which brought about significant victories for labor rights through initiatives such as the boycott of grapes and the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act.

Governor Kounalakis emphasized Huerta's enduring impact, stating, "As we celebrate Dolores Huerta’s impactful contributions to the labor, civil rights, and women’s movements, I urge all Californians to take inspiration from her example and work to make a positive impact in our communities."

Dolores Huerta, a recipient of prestigious awards such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award, continues her advocacy through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, striving to empower marginalized communities and nurture the next generation of social justice leaders.

In conclusion, Governor Kounalakis officially proclaimed, "NOW THEREFORE I, ELENI KOUNALAKIS, Acting Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim April 10, 2024, as 'Dolores Huerta Day.'" The proclamation was signed by Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis and attested by Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D.
