California Attorney General Rob Bonta visited Casa Sueños in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, a newly constructed affordable housing development. Casa Sueños, built in partnership by Bridge Housing and The Unity Council, will provide 181 units of affordable housing for working families and essential workers, including supportive housing for the chronically homeless.

During his visit, Attorney General Bonta also toured Juntos Fruitvale, a planned cultural hub for the community. At a press conference, he highlighted the actions taken by the California Department of Justice to protect renters and promote affordable housing near jobs and transit, especially in celebration of Fair Housing Month.

Bonta expressed his commitment to addressing the housing crisis, stating, “The housing crisis we are facing in California is serious. My Housing Justice Team has been laser-focused on tackling this important issue, and collaborating with organizations like The Unity Council is a critical part of our efforts.”

In response, The Unity Council CEO Chris Iglesias emphasized the importance of affordable housing in building a thriving community, saying, “At The Unity Council, we believe investing in placed-based affordable housing isn't just about providing shelter; it's about cultivating the roots of a thriving vibrant community.”

Attorney General Bonta's Housing Justice Team, established in 2021, has been actively working towards advancing housing access, affordability, and equity in California. Some of the accomplishments of the Housing Justice Team include filing a lawsuit against the City of Elk Grove, securing settlements with cities like Fullerton and companies like Invitation Homes, and supporting local initiatives like the City of Eureka's affordable housing planning efforts.

Members of the public are encouraged to access resources and information on the DOJ’s Housing Portal and HCD’s website to support housing access in California.
