Bird lovers and enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the arrival of new members to the peregrine falcon family residing on UC Berkeley's Campanile. Annie, the matriarch, and her partner Archie are expecting up to four chicks to hatch on or before April 24th. The excitement surrounding this event has led to the organization of the third annual Hatch Day celebration at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA).

Visitors to Hatch Day will have the opportunity to witness the hatching of the falcon chicks in real-time on a large outdoor screen, displaying a livestream from the Nest Cam installed in the bell tower. According to a report by Dave Taylor for BAMPFA, "the evolving falcon family’s well-being is overseen by Cal Falcons, a coalition of scientists, educators, and other volunteers." The organization will provide valuable insights to visitors as the chicks begin to make their appearance.

One of the highlights of this year's Hatch Day is the inclusion of a live raptor making a special appearance at the event. Falcon experts will be on hand to answer questions, ASL interpreters will provide assistance, and the Berkeley Public Library will offer engaging projects for young attendees. As mentioned by Julie Rodrigues Widholm, Executive Director of BAMPFA, "Hatch Day has become a beloved tradition that marks the beginning of spring each year. We are thrilled to share this natural marvel and celebration of new life."

Cal Falcons will also hold a contest to name the newly hatched chicks once they have emerged from their eggs. The chicks will be prepared by Annie and Archie for independence, as they are expected to eventually find mates and establish their own territories. The peregrine falcon population has thrived in urban coastal settings like Berkeley, thanks to federal environmental protections imposed in the late 1970s.

For those unable to attend the Hatch Day celebration in person, a livestream of Annie and Archie's nest is available 24/7 on the Cal Falcons website. The event promises to be an educational and engaging experience for all attendees, offering a unique opportunity to witness the marvel of new life in the falcon family.
