Thurmond highlighted the innovative approaches of the honorees, emphasizing that students in these schools are actively engaged in addressing global issues such as climate change and local challenges like water quality and waste management. He noted, "Within these institutions, students are not merely recipients of knowledge; they are active participants in addressing pressing global issues, such as climate change, alongside tackling local challenges like water quality, food security, energy conservation, waste management, and emotional well-being."
Of the honorees, Thurmond expressed satisfaction that more than half come from communities with significant needs in the state. He commended California's Green Ribbon Schools for nurturing the next generation's capacity for creativity and critical thinking, preparing them to be effective stewards of the environment.
