Mikael Villalobos, associate vice chancellor for the Office of Campus and Community Relations at UC Davis, has spent over 30 years working towards a more inclusive campus environment. In the latest episode of "Face to Face With Chancellor May," Villalobos, an alumnus of UC Davis, discusses his career and dedication to the university's Principles of Community.

During his conversation with Chancellor Gary S. May, Villalobos highlighted the Campus Community Book Project as one of his significant achievements. He stated that it "really aims at having dialogue, important discussions on controversial topics" and described it as "a beautiful example of what community building really is like."

As UC Davis marks the 35th anniversary of its Principles of Community, Villalobos remains committed to ensuring these values are central to campus life. He shared his thoughts on how these principles have transitioned from abstract ideas to tangible applications through various centers and working groups.

Villalobos emphasized the importance of embracing these principles: “I do think that it’s important that we find the opportunity to always speak about our principles because at the heart of our principles is really for everyone to embrace.” He added that without universal acceptance, creating a desired community becomes challenging.

Chancellor May concurred with Villalobos' sentiments. “I like to tell people that our principles and our values have permanence,” he said. “They don’t change with the direction of the wind or what’s going on.”

The episode also delves into Villalobos’ personal insights, leadership philosophy, and favorite artists.

Chancellor May's talk show has featured over 40 guests from various sectors within UC Davis, including faculty, staff, and students. All episodes are available on the Face to Face webpage.
