SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom has declared April 28, 2024, as “Workers’ Memorial Day” in California. In a proclamation issued today, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of honoring and remembering those who have lost their lives or been injured on the job.
Governor Newsom stated, "On Workers’ Memorial Day, we acknowledge, remember, and honor all those who lost their lives or were injured on the job, and renew our commitment to securing safe and healthy working conditions for all workers." He further highlighted the risks that workers face daily in various industries and expressed California's gratitude towards them, pledging to protect those who contribute to the state's economy.
The proclamation also recognized California's history of advocating for workers' rights and safety measures. Governor Newsom pointed out the state's past initiatives such as the adoption of an Injury and Illness Prevention Program standard in 1991 and the implementation of COVID-19 prevention standards during the public health emergency.
Acknowledging the efforts of workers in championing safer working conditions, Governor Newsom mentioned advancements made in improving conditions and wages for various worker groups in recent years. He attributed these positive changes to the leadership of workers who have advocated for better working environments.
Governor Newsom concluded the proclamation by calling for a renewed commitment to supporting the welfare of the workforce and ensuring healthy and safe workplaces for all Californians. The proclamation was signed on April 25, 2024, with Governor Newsom officially proclaiming April 28, 2024, as “Workers’ Memorial Day” in California.
