SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring May 1-7, 2024, as “Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week” in the State of California. In the proclamation, Governor Newsom highlighted the importance of addressing the mental health crisis facing children and youth, particularly those in marginalized communities.

Governor Newsom emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "Children and youth across the country are facing a mental health crisis that disproportionately impacts young people of color, LGBTQ+ youth, and those in under-resourced communities." He also pointed out that "Nationally, over 60% of youth experiencing major depression do not receive treatment," and highlighted that "From 2018 to 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of death among California’s youth aged 10 to 25 years."

Acknowledging the urgent need for action, Governor Newsom outlined California's commitment to providing accessible and culturally competent behavioral health services to children, youth, and families. He stressed the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure that children receive the care they require.

As part of the state's efforts, Governor Newsom mentioned the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative, which aims to transform how California addresses the behavioral health needs of young individuals and their families. He encouraged all Californians to familiarize themselves with the available resources and services to support children's mental health and to be proactive in seeking help when needed.

In closing, Governor Newsom urged Californians to participate in Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week and to prioritize connecting with one another and offering support to those in need. The proclamation serves as a reminder of the critical role that each individual plays in promoting the well-being of California's children and youth.
