Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared May 2024 as “Jewish American Heritage Month” in California. In a proclamation issued by the Governor, he highlighted the significant contributions of Jewish Americans to the state and the nation.
According to Governor Newsom, "Throughout our history, generations of Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution have sought the promise of freedom and opportunity to start life anew in America." California is home to a large Jewish population, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego.
The Governor acknowledged the resilience and enduring faith of the Jewish people, stating, "This month, we recognize the enduring faith, perseverance, and resilience of the Jewish people and lift up the many ways that Jewish Americans enrich our culture, politics, civil society, and countless other areas."
Governor Newsom also addressed the challenges faced by the Jewish community, including antisemitic hate. He emphasized the importance of taking action to combat bigotry and violence, particularly in light of the historical atrocities like the Holocaust. The Governor highlighted the efforts of California to increase security at places of worship, fund anti-hate programs, and provide resources for reporting hate acts.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom reiterated California's commitment to fighting racial, ethnic, and religious hate through education and empathy. He called for a collective celebration of the diverse contributions of Jewish Americans to the California story, emphasizing the importance of pluralism, cultural diversity, and religious freedom.
