SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed May 5-11, 2024, as “Wildfire Preparedness Week” in California, emphasizing the state's efforts to combat the increasing threat of wildfires and improve community resilience.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom highlighted the challenges posed by intensifying climate impacts on wildfire seasons, stating, "California and much of the West are experiencing more challenging wildfire seasons amid intensifying climate impacts." He acknowledged the state's proactive measures to enhance forest management and invest in emergency response efforts, resulting in a decrease in the destruction of structures compared to previous years.

CAL FIRE's progress in fuels reduction and mitigation was also commended, with over 105,500 acres of fuels treatment conducted last year. The importance of such projects in slowing down wildfires and providing safe areas for firefighting operations was underscored.

The theme for this year's Wildfire Preparedness Week, "meeting the mission through partnerships," highlighted the significance of collaboration and collective responsibility in managing wildfire risks. Governor Newsom urged Californians to take steps like creating defensible space around homes, developing action plans, and participating in Fire Safe Councils to enhance community safety.

Governor Newsom encouraged all Californians to educate themselves on wildfire preparedness by visiting ReadyForWildfire.org, emphasizing the collective effort needed to build a more fire-resilient California.

As the state prepares for the upcoming wildfire season, Governor Newsom's proclamation aims to raise awareness and emphasize the individual and collective roles in safeguarding lives, property, and communities from the threat of wildfires.
