California remains the #1 state for tourism

SAN FRANCISCO – Governor Gavin Newsom and Visit California CEO Caroline Beteta broke the news today that travel spending in California soared to an unprecedented $150.4 billion last year, surpassing the previous record of $144.9 billion set in 2019. The state's thriving tourism industry has contributed significantly to California's status as the world's 5th largest economy and its population growth.

Governor Newsom expressed, “From our world-renowned coastline, to the world’s tallest trees, to our iconic cities and theme parks, California is the nation’s coming attraction. Visitors from all over the world are coming here to experience the wonder of the Golden State, boosting our economy and creating good-paying jobs for years to come.”

The data revealed in the report, titled "The Economic Impact of Travel in California," prepared by Dean Runyan Associates and released by Visit California, showcases a 3.8% increase in spending compared to 2019 and a 5.6% surge from 2022. Visit California CEO Caroline Beteta emphasized, “California tourism is back where it belongs – setting records and providing for the workers, business owners and all Californians who depend on the travel industry as a cornerstone of our state’s economy. The industry has once again proved its ability to recover from any challenge, whether it be economic or environmental. California continues to be the largest, most diverse and most resilient tourism economy in the United States.”

The remarkable growth in tourism spending has not only shattered previous records but has also resulted in a substantial economic impact for the state. In 2023, visitor spending generated $12.7 billion in state and local tax revenue, marking a 3% increase from 2019. Moreover, tourism created 64,900 new jobs last year, bringing the total industry employment to 1,155,000.

California maintains its position as the 5th largest economy globally, boasting a nominal GDP of nearly $3.9 trillion in 2023 and a growth rate of 6.1% from the previous year. With a per capita GDP ranking as the second largest among major economies, California continues to attract both visitors and new residents.

In addition to its economic prowess, California remains a top destination for new business ventures, access to venture capital funding, and excels in tourism spending, manufacturing, high-tech, and agriculture. Governor Newsom also recently announced a population increase in the state for the first time since the pandemic, indicating a positive trend for California's future.
