Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement today, urging the Half Moon Bay Planning Commission to cease delaying the approval of a 40-unit project aimed at providing affordable housing for adult agricultural workers. This delay by the Commission comes in the wake of the community feeling the impacts of a mass shooting last year that exposed the dire living conditions of local farmworkers.
"Last year, a mass shooting illuminated the miserable living conditions of agricultural workers in Half Moon Bay. Instead of doing what's right and approving much-needed housing for workers who feed us, local authorities are stalling a 40-unit plan for low-income adults. This delay is atrocious and endangers Californians' well-being. The state's Housing Accountability Unit is reviewing the city's actions and will take all necessary measures to hold Half Moon Bay accountable if the project does not progress as required by state law," said Governor Gavin Newsom.
In 2023, immediately following the shooting in Half Moon Bay, Governor Newsom met with survivors and witnessed first-hand the unacceptable living conditions of farmworkers in this area. The Governor has budgeted millions in funds and resources to ensure those working in agriculture receive state support.
Additionally, Governor Newsom has called for greater accountability and implemented new approaches to address the state's need for more housing. Under Governor Newsom's mandate, the successful Housing Accountability Unit (HAU) was created to work with local authorities and hold jurisdictions accountable for their fair share of housing. Since its inception, HAU has unlocked over 23,000 housing units that otherwise would not have been built.
The Half Moon Bay Planning Commission has an opportunity to advance this crucial housing project next week during their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, May 14th.
