Christopher Ying, the 2024 University Medalist, addressed his fellow graduates in a heartfelt commencement speech on Saturday, May 11. Ying, who was recognized as the top graduating senior, shared his unique experiences and insights during the ceremony at UC Berkeley.

"Thank you Chancellor Christ for the introduction," began Ying. "Good morning professors, family, and hello class of 2024. I am humbled and honored to stand before you today."

Ying recounted his time teaching algebra at a junior college last summer where he demonstrated the real-world application of parabolas by throwing a marker across the room. However, this wasn't an ordinary classroom; it was located deep within San Quentin, California's oldest and largest prison.

During his volunteer tenure at San Quentin, Ying experienced rigorous training from prison authorities regarding what he could bring or wear, who he could speak to and was informed that if taken hostage, he would be on his own.

The first time he entered the prison, Ying confessed to being terrified. He was introduced to inmates through their crimes and ID numbers - labels that initially defined them. However, as he spent more time with them, he learned to look beyond these labels.

"I met a grandfather who has never seen his grandchildren but wants them to be proud that he finished college in prison," shared Ying. "I met a basketball superfan who calls the family of his victim every day to heal and build a relationship... I met a computer scientist who got married last fall after he got out of prison."

Ying concluded his address by urging his peers to look beyond labels when interacting with others in society.

"When you walk through those gates into the world," said Ying, "I hope you will treasure and respect the individuality of others... Look beyond the label."

He also reminded everyone that there is one label they all share: proud Cal grads from the Class of 2024.

"Congratulations to each and every one of you, and Go Bears!" Ying concluded.
