In recent years, California has been rapidly expanding its clean energy sources, successfully powering nearly 40 million people and the world's fifth-largest economy with an increasingly green energy supply.
Clean energy resources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric power, batteries, and more have surpassed grid demand at some point during the day for 34 consecutive days. This milestone was highlighted by Governor Gavin Newsom during his address at the Vatican Climate Summit. In his speech, he criticized the special interests of Big Oil companies that have attempted to obstruct progress in clean energy.
On Monday, May 13th, solar energy output reached a new record high of 18,933 MW - enough to power millions of homes. Compared to five years ago, the state is now generating over twice as much solar power. Furthermore, capacity has increased twentyfold since 2012.
A new record was also set on May 16th for battery output to the grid. Batteries supplied 7,528 MW of clean energy that day, surpassing the previous record by 332 MW. The state's battery capacity has grown by an impressive 1,250% since the beginning of Newsom's administration in 2019 - up from just 770 MW.
